Dave Smith has been playing guitar and singing since the 1970's. In those days, he was playing fingerstyle and flatpicking folk songs in cafes and bars up and down Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village. He recorded an album of his own material in 1971 with Mike Melford, who produced some of John Hartford's recordings. During the first half of that decade, he played guitar and sang with Rocky Kramm, Dave Anderson, Ed, and Theresa Trull in Ed's Bush Band, a Durham rock group. Through the 80's, he played jazz and rock and roll with local saxophonist Jim Henderson. In the '90's, he played various forms of electric music with Carrboro’s Reuben's Train. Most recently, he's been playing acoustic swing and country music with the Divas and Dave in Pittsboro.
